Salary: £38,265 - £50,539 depending on experience

We're involved in producing, distributing and supplying electricity and gas as well as providing other energy-related services. The core location for this role is our newly developed offices at No. 1 Forbury Place, conveniently located in Reading town centre. This new location offers flexibility in the way we work, and with this in mind, this role can be carried out by splitting time between the office and either your home or another SSE location.
Digital Studio Team
We are responsible for delivering continuous improvements and new capabilities to our web and app channels. Over the last year the Digital team have moved to an agile approach which has successfully delivered major projects such as Responsive Services and Online Smart Appointments on time and budget, while greatly reducing both risks and costs. We are now expanding our team and looking forward to delivering challenging new projects with continued success but we need to diversify our team, skill sets and generate new ideas.
Main Purpose of Job
With your positive can-do attitude and a little bit of curiosity, you will be working collaboratively and iteratively within your agile team(s); to seek out continual improvement in our ability to test our great software, primarily via automation but also some exploratory techniques. Most of all we want you to share your opinions, hear what you have to say and make a real difference. Have a little fun along the way and make it infectious.
Running a small but perfectly formed team of test engineers; you will appreciate that there are varying levels of skills and experience within the team and strive to get the best possible outcomes in order to maximise quality.
You will guide and mentor your team, but also willing to learn from them as well.
Take ownership of all facets of testing, working closely with your Digital Engine colleagues to create great software outcomes for our customers.
Know your stuff and always seek out new ways of working. You get a real kick out of sharing your knowledge and likewise receptive to learning from others.
You will appreciate test needs for each software iteration using ‘blink’ estimation techniques, amongst others, working with the wider delivery team.
You will ensure environments and data needs are provisioned as and when required.
You will take charge of reporting and resolve the defects.
Provide ‘in the moment’ feedback on any matters relating to testing activity.
Embracing and actively promoting company values and initiatives in a leading role.
Represent Digital in various forums such as regular team briefings, brown bag sessions or an impromptu demo to stakeholders.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Proven experience of working as a Test Lead, in a fast paced agile delivery team for at least 3 years
Have demonstrable knowledge of the latest testing techniques, as well as more traditional approaches
Able to self-organise and be assertive on your team plans and activities
Demonstrate the ability to review and critique current ways of working and generate innovative solutions to problems
Not afraid to get stuck in with the team and be highly skilled in your technical understanding of the testing/development landscape
SDLC, CD, CI, BDD, TDD are just many of the acronyms that are second nature to you
Knowledge and experience of working with SQL (DB2, SQL server)
As part of our selection process there will be a practical element involving automation in the language of C# or Java. It is vital for the Test Lead to be proficient in this as they will be involved in automation programming and providing related leadership and coaching on this to the wider team.
